“On Tyranny: Propaganda, Politics, and Persuasion” With Yale Historian Timothy Snyder, PhD, March 14

This Open VISIONS Forum event is the 2024 Joan and Henry Katz lecture, presented in collaboration with the Bennett Center for Judaic Studies and the Department of History at ϲʹ.

The Regina A Quick Center for the Arts is pleased to present a timely Open VISIONS Forum event featuring Timothy Snyder, PhD, on Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Presented in collaboration with the Bennett Center for Judaic Studies and the Department of History at ϲʹ, Dr. Snyder’s lecture is titled “On Tyranny: Propaganda, Politics, and Persuasion.” A masterful presenter, the Yale University historian of the Holocaust will draw a direct line between the big ideas of the past and our lives today.

Dr. Snyder’s unique ability to distill practical guidance for action from the darkest chapters of history launched his 2017 book, On Tyranny: 20 Lessons from the 20th Century, to the #1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list, where it stayed for two years.

“The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy,” Dr. Snyder wrote in On Tyranny. “Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.”

Dr. Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He is the author of numerous acclaimed books including On Tyranny, The Road to Unfreedom, Black Earth, Bloodlands, and his latest, On Malady, which begins with the author’s recent near-fatal illness and is a short, urgent examination of healthcare as a human right.

His work has appeared in forty languages and has received a number of prizes, including the Emerson Prize in the Humanities, the Literature Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Václav Havel Foundation Prize, the Leipzig Award for European Understanding, and the Dutch Auschwitz Committee Award. Dr. Snyder received his BA degree from Brown University and his doctorate from the University of Oxford, where he was a Marshall Scholar.

Led by ϲʹ Professor Philip Eliasoph, PhD, the Open VISIONS Forum series offers access to experts and panelists on a range of artistic, political, and cultural topics.

The Quick Center thanks the Jewish Federation of Greater ϲʹCounty, Moffly Media, Artisan Restaurant, The Delamar Southport, and Delamar Spa for serving as sponsors of this event.
